The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) Center for Marine Science (CMS) is hiring a Research Computing and Data Professional to support their growing coastal and marine research computing environment.

CMS is an internationally recognized research center supporting a wide range of computationally intensive research areas, including genomics and bioinformatics, oceanographic modeling, natural products chemistry, marine geology, aquaculture, and environmental science.

About the Role

  • Support and enable research use of CMS's HPC environment, including software installation, application porting, troubleshooting, and scheduler support (Slurm).
  • Partner with researchers, staff, and students to optimize computational workflows and improve research productivity.
  • Collaborate with UNCW ITS on HPC operations and infrastructure.
  • Develop and deliver training in HPC, scientific programming, and research computing best practices.
  • Mentor student researchers and HPC interns.
  • Contribute to grant proposals and support computational and data-intensive research projects.

What They're Looking For

  • Experience working in Linux-based research computing environments.
  • Proficiency in Python or R and experience with software development practices such as Git/GitHub.
  • Experience with job schedulers such as Slurm or LSF.
  • Knowledge of parallel computing and scientific workflows.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to support researchers from diverse disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a computational or natural sciences discipline.
  • Experience supporting shared HPC resources and training researchers.
  • Experience with GPU computing, container technologies (Docker/Apptainer), or Linux system administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with faculty, students, and university stakeholders.
